In today’s environment, especially as we struggle to be politically correct, or just try to wade through the divisiveness in our country, it may seem almost impossible to interject a little humor into the workplace. A former boss told me once almost two decades ago “Try not to joke around with anybody. I guarantee you there will always be someone that takes it the wrong way.” I think he said that while he was readjusting the stick he had up his ass. SEE! HUMOR! (And I’m sure someone will read my comment and get offended.)
However, despite the unreasonable level of fear of repercussion in business, not only has there been studies of how humor in the workplace improves morale and productivity but also there may not be any better time in our history to introduce some levity into our work environment. As I mentioned in a past article, everyone is spent. People need the healing that humor can provide. As leaders how can we introduce a little harmless humor into the workplace?
